Incense

Incense is a type of resin which plays an important part in and around the tabernacle and the Temple of Solomon. Burning incense releases a pleasant aroma.

It is unclear from which type of tree this resin was harvested in the ancient Near East.

Important in Religious Rituals

Incense was used in religious services in Israel, for example on the altar of incense in the tabernacle or when making the daily incense offerings (Exodus 30:1-10).

Burning incense was seen as a symbol of worship and prayer (Leviticus 2:1).
