Harp

The harp belongs to the family of stringed instruments. It is mentioned in the Bible nearly always in conjunction with a lyre, as in 2 Samuel 6:5. The Hebrew word for harp is nevel.

What Did a Harp Look Like?

A harp was probably an instrument with many strings; it had more strings than a lyre. The strings were made of sheep’s colons. The sound was therefore low and loud.
The harp was arched or triangular and was sometimes played horizontally with a plectrum.

How was the Harp Used?

The harp was chiefly played by the Levites in and around the Temple, for example, for a procession with the Ark of the Covenant (Covenant Box) or for victory celebrations (see 2 Chronicles 20:28).
