Flute

Various wind instruments occur in the Bible. These instruments were used to warn people or summon them together, though they were also used to make music in the Temple.

What Did a Flute Look Like?

A flute was made out of bamboo or sometimes out of wood. There were various kinds of flutes. In addition to the usual flute, there were also double and pan flutes.
A flute was often used outside the Temple to make music. It was the custom in Israel, for example, to play the flute at a funeral.

The Double Flute

The Hebrew word for the double flute is chalil. A double flute could be made out of bone, metal or wood and it had a reed. This instrument can be seen as the forerunner of the modern oboe or clarinet.
The double flute was also used at the anointing of a king (see 1 Kings 1:40) and during processions of prophets (see 1 Samuel 10:5).
