Hermes

Hermes is the name of a Greek god, who was the son of Zeus and a half-brother of Apollo. He was viewed as a god who provided happiness and fertility. He was the patron of thieves and merchants and the god of eloquence. He was also the messenger of the gods.

Hermes in the Bible

The New Testament mentions the name Hermes twice:

  • In Acts 14:12, where Paul is called Hermes by the people of Lystra. The inhabitants of Lystra were thinking of Hermes as the god of eloquence and the messenger.
  • In Romans 16:14, but there it is the name of a person who is otherwise unknown.
