Administration of Justice

When judgements were given in biblical times, this was done by judges.
There was no public prosecutor as in our legal system. The victim in a legal case had to represent himself as the plaintiff. He stood next to the accused in the court.

In the Old Testament

In Old Testament times, the judges were (village) elders, priests or kings. Judges also appear in the biblical book of Judges. They not only make legal judgements but are also leaders of the people.

In the New Testament

In the New Testament, religious cases were handled in the Sanhedrin. Non-religious cases came under Roman law.
