Pomegranate

The pomegranate is the fruit of a shrub-like tree that can grow to around 20 feet (about 6 m) high. The round fruit is scarlet in colour and shaped like a star when cut open. It contains many seeds.

Pomegranate as a Symbol

The pomegranate is a symbol of beauty and fertility. In the Song of Solomon 4:3 (ESV), the man compares the woman’s cheeks to the halves of a pomegranate.

Pomegranate as Decoration

The seam of the high priest’s cloak is decorated with a pomegranate motif (Exodus 28:33-34).

The pomegranate can also be found on the decorative capitals in Solomon’s Temple (see 1 Kings 7:18).
