Bill of Divorce

A bill of divorce is a document that a woman was given if her husband wanted to divorce her.

In Practice

The husband had to give the wife the bill of divorce in the presence of two witnesses.
The bill was proof that the woman was no longer married. In this way she was protected against accusations of adultery if she wanted to marry again.

Bill of Divorce as a Metaphor

The bill of divorce is also used to represent the broken relationship between God and his people, as in Isaiah 50:1 and Jeremiah 3:8.
