Chemosh

Chemosh was the national god of Moab. The Moabites believed that he protected them and helped them in battle.

Chemosh in the Old Testament

The Old Testament mentions the name Chemosh eight times. In 1 Kings 11:7 we read that King Solomon built a sacrificial site in Jerusalem in honour of the god Chemosh.

Moabite Stone

The god Chemosh is known primarily from the Moabite Stone, also called the Mesha Stele. This is a memorial stone from the ninth century BC which bears an inscription by King Mesha of Moab. This inscription records the victory of the Moabites over the Northern Kingdom of Israel. King Mesha writes that they owe their victory to their god Chemosh.
