Mark 11:24GNBOpen in Bible reader

It was a hot day in the streets of Capernaum, when the Roman soldier came to Jesus. The urgency in his attitude and stress on his face signalled the seriousness of the matter. “Lord,” he began pleading, “I have a servant at home who is seriously ill. He writhed in pain and cannot walk. Please come and help him!” Without hesitation, Jesus answered, “I’ll come with you.”

One would think that the soldier would immediately turn around and lead Jesus to his house. He did not do it. His response surprised Jesus. “Lord,” he started. “I am not worthy that You come over to my house! I’m a man who knows authority. I have people above me with authority and people under me. When I give an order, it is immediately done. I know that you have authority. Say the word, and I know it will happen.” In Matthew 8:10,13 Jesus answered, “‘Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith … Go! Let it be done just as you believed it would.’ And his servant was healed at that moment.”

What is your need today? What breakthrough do you desire that only God can give you? A spouse? Health? Wisdom about your financial position? A child of your own? A job? A house? A breakthrough? Do you go to God in absolute confidence like this soldier or do you pray with a bit of doubt in your heart? In Hebrews 11:6 we read: “without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.” In Isaiah 59:1 we read: “Surely the arm of the LORD is not too short to save, nor his ear too dull to hear.” If we believe that God can do what we ask Him, still trusting that He knows what is best for us, we can grab hold of the words in Mark 11:24: “Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.”

Although we cannot manipulate God, we can with a sincere heart filled with childlike faith tell Him what we desire, as He desires a life of abundance for us. Let us learn from the Roman soldier and put our faith in God who can help us. God bless you.

Assignment for the day: Write down your needs and desires. Talk to God about it and trust Him.
