He can … – Day 20

He can set you free

Bible text(s)

John 8

36If the Son sets you free, then you will be really free.

Deuteronomy 30

19I am now giving you the choice between life and death, between God's blessing and God's curse, and I call heaven and earth to witness the choice you make. Choose life.

Deuteronomy 30:19GNBOpen in Bible reader

A few years ago I met Glynis Grant, nine months after two robbers attacked her in her home. They shot her in her head and left her for dead. What impressed me, apart from God’s supernatural protection, was Glynis’ faith in God and how she did not harbour a grudge towards the attackers. Later, I received an e-mail from her. Here is an excerpt of it:

I recently had to attend a funeral in Gouda (where the burglary took place years ago). I do not live there anymore. Upon my arrival in town, someone told me that the guy who fired the shot has been released after more than a decade in jail. In my spirit, I sensed that I had to meet him and tell him that I have forgiven him.

Someone took me to the young man. When I stood in front of him, I asked him if he knew who I was. He said, “No ma’am.” I told him, “I am Mrs. Grant. The woman you shot.” His eyes filled with fear and I could see that he was extremely uncomfortable. I put my hand on his chest and said, “It is fine. I’ve already forgiven you 13 years ago.” I could see he wrestled deep inside of him as his eyes filled with tears. He put his head down and said, “Ma’am, that image plays out in my mind every single day … I am so sorry for what I did to you.” I leaned forward and pulled him against me, saying, “I forgive you.” He shook as he sobbed. I could sense a moment of healing.

The young man’s former girlfriend stood close by. She was 6 months pregnant when he went to jail. I could see that she still bore a grudge against him for what he had done to her and their daughter. I spoke to both of them about the importance of choices. I also explained to them that my decision to forgive the young man years ago spared me from a life of hatred and bitterness. I said that they can experience it too, but that forgiveness is the key. Where the woman was initially reluctant, she eventually looked into the young man’s eyes. She hugged him and while tears flowed down both their cheeks, he apologised and she forgave him. Restoration happened in that moment.

On the way back from Gouda, I thanked God for this meeting as I once again realised that when the Son has set us free, we are free indeed. I give Him all the glory!”

In John 8:36 we read: “Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.” In Deuteronomy 30:19 it is written: “I call heaven and earth to witness against you that I have set life and death before you, blessing and curse. Choose life so that you and your descendants may live.”

God can and wants to give us all a life in abundance. The key is forgiveness. When it is really tough, God can give you the courage to take that first step. Let us choose life so we can also receive freedom. God bless you.

Assignment for the day: Make a list of people you need to forgive – or perhaps who need to forgive you. Ask God for wisdom and opportunities to make peace. It is always worth it!
