Apodictic Laws

In apodictically formulated legal provisions, certain things are simply forbidden. A direct prohibition can be worded in three ways in the Old Testament.

  1. 1.“You shall not do x.”
  2. 2.“Anyone who does x will certainly be put to death.”
  3. 3.“Cursed is anyone who does x.”

A direct commandment can also be worded in three different ways. A good example is the commandment to honour your father and mother:

  1. 1.Honour your father and your mother (Exodus 20:12; Deuteronomy 5:16).
  2. 2.Whoever strikes his father or his mother shall be put to death (Exodus 21:15).
  3. 3.Cursed be anyone who dishonours his father or his mother (Deuteronomy 27:16).
