Apodictic Laws
In apodictically formulated legal provisions, certain things are simply forbidden. A direct prohibition can be worded in three ways in the Old Testament.
- 1.“You shall not do x.”
- 2.“Anyone who does x will certainly be put to death.”
- 3.“Cursed is anyone who does x.”
A direct commandment can also be worded in three different ways. A good example is the commandment to honour your father and mother:
- 1.Honour your father and your mother (Exodus 20:12
; Deuteronomy 5:16 ). - 2.Whoever strikes his father or his mother shall be put to death (Exodus 21:15
). - 3.Cursed be anyone who dishonours his father or his mother (Deuteronomy 27:16
).
