Family

Family was very important in the time of the Bible. Family, in this case, means extended family, a father and his wife (or wives), children, daughters-in-law, grandchildren and slaves.

Structure

A family could be made up of 50 to 100 people and several generations, all living in close proximity.
Several families together would form a clan and a number of clans together were a tribe.

From Father to Son

Families were patriarchal: descent and property were passed down through the male line. As soon as a daughter married, she went to live with her husband’s family.
