2 Kings: Structure

2 Kings contains the continuation of the historical accounts about the kingdoms of Israel and Judah. It can largely be divided into two sections:

  • the history of Israel and Judah until the fall of Samaria;
  • the history of Judah.

The Divided Kingdom

The first part of this book (2 Kings 1–17) tells the history of both kingdoms. It begins with the reign of King Ahaziah of Israel in the middle of the ninth century BC and it ends with the conquest of the capital city Samaria by the Assyrians in 722 BC. The majority of the population were carried off.

The Kingdom of Judah

The second part (2 Kings 18–25) presents the story of the kingdom of Judah. It begins with the decline of the kingdom of Israel and ends with the destruction of Jerusalem in 587 BC by Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon.
The destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem and the beginning of the Babylonian exile form a great turning point in the history of the people of Israel.

Fixed Pattern

The various kings are described according to a fixed pattern. The following points are always mentioned:

  • the beginning and length of the reign;
  • the city from which the king reigned;
  • a theological assessment;
  • a reference to the chronicles;
  • the announcement of the death of the king and the naming of his successor.
