2 Kings: Structure
2 Kings contains the continuation of the historical accounts about the kingdoms of Israel and Judah. It can largely be divided into two sections:
- the history of Israel and Judah until the fall of Samaria;
- the history of Judah.
The Divided Kingdom
The first part of this book (2 Kings 1–17
The Kingdom of Judah
The second part (2 Kings 18–25
The destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem and the beginning of the Babylonian exile
Fixed Pattern
The various kings are described according to a fixed pattern. The following points are always mentioned:
- the beginning and length of the reign;
- the city from which the king reigned;
- a theological assessment;
- a reference to the chronicles;
- the announcement of the death of the king and the naming of his successor.
