2 Corinthians: Structure

The second letter to the Corinthians is one of the most personal letters which Paul wrote.

Contents in Brief

The second letter to the Corinthians begins with a reasonably standard opening formula introducing the sender, those to whom it is sent and a greeting.
Next, 2 Corinthians 1:15–2:13 deals with various problems, such as the changed travel plans and the punishments to be meted out to those who have caused Paul grief.
Mostly 2 Corinthians 2:14–7:4 is seen as Paul’s defence of his apostleship, but the text must surely also be regarded as displaying Paul’s intention to restore relations with the Corinthians.
In chapters 8 and 9 Paul urges the Corinthians to contribute generously to the collection for the church in Jerusalem.
In 2 Corinthians 10:1–13:10 Paul tries to convince the Corinthians in sharp tones to depart from false apostles.
In 2 Corinthians 13:11-13 Paul ends his letter with a greeting and the standard blessing, which is still used in churches today.
