1 John: Structure

The first letter from John is not very clearly structured.

Summary of Contents

The plan of the letter is not very clear, because the writer frequently opts for a new approach. The writer begins in 1 John 1:5 after the preamble. After that he starts again in 1 John 2:18 and 1 John 4:1, where he tackles the deceivers firmly. Finally, there is a new start in 1 John 5:13, when the writer begins his closing words.
The author of 1 John finds himself in a situation of crisis. He wants to show, from all angles, in as an impressive way as possible, what faith must be about.
