Slavery in the Old Testament

The Old Testament differentiates between two types of slaves:

  • foreigners who were bought or taken prisoner during a war;
  • slaves who were part of the chosen people, but who had been sold by their own family, or who had sold themselves because they were no longer able to pay their debts.
