It often feels like the world is getting crazier and crazier by the time we reach October. The festive season is approaching and most people start scrambling to wrap up their end-of-year tasks. But the real reason for feeling like everything is spinning out of control is fatigue.

By this time of the year, many are already at their breaking point from stress and most of us feel like it is time for the year to end. For many, things start to speed up as the schools are about to close in just a few weeks.

It is especially in times of chaos, confusion and pressure that it helps to look at the “everyday things” in your life with gratitude.

Yes, as the year draws to a close, we often focus on the big things we are grateful for – the opportunities, the highlights and the major challenges we have overcome. However, when life is so full and chaotic, it is important to focus on the small things too. These small things can be like rays of sunlight in a dense forest.

For example, despite the traffic on my way to work, I try to take a moment to calm down and talk to God about what I am experiencing in my life. I find myself grateful for that alone time, as it has become rare for me these days. When things get hectic, I am grateful for parents who can help with the school runs or for a thoughtful friend who leaves something to eat on my desk.

When you start focusing on the small things, you quickly realise that you have a lot to be thankful for. Just think for a moment: a roof over your head, food in your fridge, the chance to hang out with friends, a cup of coffee with a family member, a call from your brother or sister, a quiet evening at home, a fun night out, time spent with your grandchild, a bargain, a warm bed to sleep in, clothes to wear, fuel in your car tank, a good movie, a wonderful book or the chance to learn something new.

There are many small things that we can be thankful for each day. We must not forget to notice them, because for many people, the things we often overlook are anything but small.

Prayer: Dear Lord, help me to remember to be grateful for the ordinary things that I so easily overlook when life gets crazy. Amen
