Relationships – Day 11
Role players in your life: The Holy Spirit
Bible text(s)
John 14
John 16
When human role players fail us, it is not reason enough to curl up and lick wounds. You see, the greatest role player in every believer’s life is the unfailing, ever-present Holy Spirit in and with you. He is the Parakletos, the One called alongside you, or as we know Him, the Comforter or Helper who was sent by the Father to everyone who follows Jesus. “And I will pray the Father and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever — the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, because He dwells with you and will be in you” (John 14:16-17; 16:7).
You are never without the presence of the Holy Spirit if you live by the truths of John 14:
You believe in God and Jesus (verse 1); you believe that Christ is in the Father and the Father in Christ (verse 11); you believe in and live from Christ — the way, truth and life (verse 6); and you love Christ, therefore you obey His commandments and words (verses 15,21,23). Can you now understand why it is possible for us to live in an intimate relationship with the Godhead?
The uncertainty triggered by the reality that on this side of life we can only know in part, as well as the numerous contradictions in life we are confronted with, can be very unsettling. However, because He is the Spirit of Truth and dwells in and with you (John 14:17), He knows exactly what you feel, think and fear and also knows about your tough questions on what truth really is. For that very reason He can guide you in all truth (John 16:13) — if you let Him.
He will also teach you everything and remind you of everything He said to His disciples (John 14:26). He will also enlighten you in things you do not know yet: “When He, the Spirit of truth has come, He will guide you in all truth … and He will tell you things to come” (John 16:13).
You also need to remember that the Holy Spirit changes the letter of the Word into a powerful weapon that, along with the rest of the body armour, not only enables you to withstand any attack of the forces of darkness, but also to stand firmly in the fight (Ephesians 6:13,17).
