Jesus – Day 1
Jesus the Word.
Bible text(s)
John 1
The Word of Life
Many people believe in the power of words and their ability to help or to harm, but how many believe in the power of the Word and, more specifically, in the Living Word in the person of Jesus Christ?
What awe-inspiring words are used here to describe the wonder of who Jesus is!
How do we know that these words refer to Jesus? In verse 14 we read: “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us … who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” and in verse 17, “For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.” These words describe the vast chasm between the law given by Moses, which is evocative of discipline and punishment when not upheld, when compared with the life, light, kindness and freedom brought by Christ. We know full well how much we depend on light in order to survive on many levels, how much more do we need the light of life?
Why awe-inspiring? Because at the outset we see that Jesus is the Word who has existed eternally and is actually God; He is the life force through which God spoke everything that has been created into existence in the very beginning. He embodied life; He brought the light into the darkness of the fallen world in which we live, through which we would find the path to eternal life. He is the living Word of God.
This all seems to be almost too much to grasp, but if we allow ourselves to reflect prayerfully on these verses, we will begin to get a sense of the immensity of their meaning. God Himself came to earth in the person of Jesus Christ; God Himself cared enough to reveal Himself to man and to provide the light that would bring man spiritual knowledge and understanding. How amazing is that?
Throughout this month we are going to be looking at who Jesus is and the significance of His life, death and resurrection on our lives.
What experience do you have of Jesus as the Word?
