Called to Care – Day 12

Caregiver burnout

Bible text(s)

1 Kings 19

3Elijah was afraid, and fled for his life; he took his servant and went to Beersheba in Judah.

Leaving the servant there, 4Elijah walked a whole day into the wilderness. He stopped and sat down in the shade of a tree and wished he would die. “It's too much, LORD,” he prayed. “Take away my life; I might as well be dead!”

5He lay down under the tree and fell asleep. Suddenly an angel touched him and said, “Wake up and eat.” 6He looked round, and saw a loaf of bread and a jar of water near his head. He ate and drank, and lay down again. 7The LORD's angel returned and woke him up a second time, saying, “Get up and eat, or the journey will be too much for you.” 8Elijah got up, ate and drank, and the food gave him enough strength to walk forty days to Sinai, the holy mountain.

Hebrews 4

Jesus the Great High Priest

14Let us, then, hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we have a great High Priest who has gone into the very presence of God — Jesus, the Son of God. 15Our High Priest is not one who cannot feel sympathy for our weaknesses. On the contrary, we have a High Priest who was tempted in every way that we are, but did not sin. 16Let us have confidence, then, and approach God's throne, where there is grace. There we will receive mercy and find grace to help us just when we need it.

Hebrews 4:14-16GNBOpen in Bible reader

The Scriptures acknowledge that we can sometimes reach the end of our strength and want to give up, like Elijah the prophet did when the evil Queen Jezebel let him know that she intended to have him killed. In times like those, we can be sure that God understands and that he will have mercy on us and renew our strength.
