In the beginning

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

The earth was formless and empty … it was dark.

Then God said, “Let there be light” – and there was light.

God saw that the light was good … that was the first day.

On the second day, God made the sky and the clouds.

And God saw that it was good.

On the third day God let the land appear. God called the land “Earth”.

The waters which had come together he called “Sea”.

And God saw that it was good.

Then God made plants bearing seed, and he made trees bearing fruit.

On the fourth day God made the sun to shine on the earth.

God also made the moon and the stars to shine at night.

And God saw that it was good.

On the fifth day, God filled the water with many kinds of living beings. He made the great sea creatures, and also the smallest fish.

God saw that it was good. He told the creatures in the water to fill the sea.

God also made all kinds of birds, and God saw that it was good.

God said, “Let the air be filled with birds.”

On the sixth day God made the animals. There were tame animals and there were also wild animals. And God saw that it was good.

Then God said, “Let us make human beings.” So God made human beings. He mad man and woman. God said, “Have many children, fill the earth, rule over the fish, the birds, and all the animals.”

And it was so.

God had finished the work he had been doing. He blessed the seventh day and set it apart as a day of rest.

God looked at everything he had made, and it was very good.
