The borders of the land
1The Lord said to Moses: 2‘You must tell the Israelites: “I will give you the land of Canaan, all the land as far as these borders: 3The southern border is from the Zin Desert to the land of Edom. The southern border starts at the Dead Sea and goes to the west 4and then goes south of Akrabbim and goes to Zin. Then the border goes south of Kadesh-Barnea to Hazar-Addar and on to Azmon. 5It then goes to the Egypt Stream and down to the sea.
6The western border is the big sea. 7The northern border starts at the big sea and goes straight to Mount Hor 8and from there straight to Lebo-Hamath. Then it goes to Zedad, 9then past Ziphron to Hazar-Enan. This is your northern border.
10The eastern border is from Hazar-Enan straight to Shepham, 11then to Riblah, east of Ain, and then along the eastern side of Lake Galilee, 12and along the Jordan River to the Salt Sea. These are the borders of the land.” ’
13Moses told the Israelites: ‘This is the land that you must divide among the 9 and a half tribes, like the Lord has said, 14because the families of the Reuben and Gad tribes and half of the Manasseh tribe have already got their land. 15Those 2 and a half tribes have received their land east of the Jordan River on the other side of the city of Jericho.’
The people who had to divide the land
16The Lord said to Moses: 17‘The people who have to divide the land are the priest Eleazar and Joshua, son of Nun, 18and with them you must take one leader from each tribe. They must divide the land. 19The leaders are: Caleb, son of Jephunneh, for the Judah tribe, 20Shemuel, son of Ammihud, for the Simeon tribe, 21Elidad, son of Kislon, for the Benjamin tribe, 22and Bukki, son of Jogli for the Dan tribe. 23For the Joseph tribes, Hanniel, son of Ephod, for the Manasseh tribe, 24and Kemuel, son of Shiphtan, for the Ephraim tribe, 25Elizaphan, son of Parnak, for the Zebulun tribe, 26Paltiel, son of Azzan, for the Issachar tribe, 27Ahihud, son of Shelomi, for the Asher tribe 28and Pedahel, son of Ammihud, for the Naphtali tribe.’ 29The Lord chose these men to divide the land of Canaan for the Israelites.
