The journey of the Israelites from Egypt to Moab
1Here is a list of the places where the Israelites stayed when they came out of Egypt. They went in groups. Moses and Aaron led them. 2The Lord told Moses to write down the names of the places where they stayed each time before they went further, and Moses did that. Here is a list of all the places.
3The Israelites went away from the town of Rameses in Egypt on the 15th day of the first month. It was the morning after Passover. The Lord led them and all the Egyptian people were looking at them as they went away. 4The Egyptians were burying their oldest sons because the Lord had caused them to die and He punished their gods.
5The Israelites went from Rameses and they put up their tents at Sukkoth. 6They went from Sukkoth and they put up their tents at Etham, near the desert. 7From Etham they went back to Pi-Hahiroth near Baal-Zephon and they put up their tents at Migdol.
8They went further from Pi-Hahiroth and after they went through the sea, they went into the Etham Desert and after 3 days they put up their tents at Marah. 9From Marah they went further to Elim. There were 12 fountains and 70 palm trees.
10They went further and they put up their tents at the Red Sea and then 11they went into the Zin Desert, 12then to Dophkah, 13to Alush, 14and to Rephidim. There was no water for the people to drink at Rephidim.
15From Rephidim they went further and they put up their tents in the Sinai Desert. 16Then they went to Kibroth-Hattaavah, 17to Hazeroth, 18to Rithmah, 19to Rimmon-Perez, 20to Libnah, 21to Rissah, 22to Kehelathah, 23to Mount Shepher, 24to Haradah, 25to Makheloth, 26to Tahath, 27to Terah, 28to Mithkah, 29to Hashmonah, 30to Moseroth, 31to Bene-Jaakan, 32to Hor-Haggidgad, 33to Jotbathah, 34to Abronah, 35to Ezion-Geber 36and then they went into the Zin Desert to the town of Kadesh. 37They went further from Kadesh and they put up their tents at Mount Hor near the land of Edom.
38The Lord told the priest Aaron to go to the top of Mount Hor where he died. That was on the first day of the 5th month in the 40th year after the Israelites had come out of Egypt. 39Aaron was 123 years old when he died on Mount Hor.
40The king of Arad was a Canaanite. They told him that the Israelites had come into his land. He lived in the South land of Canaan.
41The Israelites went further from Mount Hor and they put up their tents at Zalmonah, 42then they went to Punon, 43to Oboth, 44to Iye-Abarim in the land of Moab, 45to Dibon-Gad, 46to Almon-Diblathaim, 47to the Abarim Mountains near Nebo, 48and in the flatlands of Moab near the Jordan River, on the other side of the city of Jericho. 49They put up their tents near the Jordan River, from the town of Beth-Jeshimoth to Abel-Shittim in the flatlands of Moab.
The Israelites must chase away the people who lived in the land
50The Lord talked to Moses in the flatlands of Moab at the Jordan River, near the city of Jericho. The Lord said to Moses: 51‘You must talk to the Israelites and tell them: “When you go over the Jordan River into the land of Canaan, 52you must chase away all the people who live in the land. You must destroy their gods, their stone images and their metal images and you must destroy their altars and places_of_sacrifice. 53Then you must take the land for yourselves and you must go and live there, because I have given the land to you. It must be your land.
54You must draw_lots and divide the land among your families. Give a big part of land to a big family and a small part of land to a small family. Each person must get the land that the lots show and each tribe must have its own land.
55If you don't chase away the people who live in the land, the people that you leave behind will be like thorns in your eyes and nails in your backs. They will make you suffer in the land where you live. 56And then I will make you suffer like I wanted them to suffer.” ’
