The Lord tells Joshua to divide the land
1When Joshua was very old, the Lord said to him: ‘Joshua, you are very old now, but there are still many parts of the land that you have not won and taken. 2You have not taken the land of Geshur and the land of the Philistines. 3(The land of the Philistines is part of Canaan. It is from the Shihor River near the border of Egypt, to the town of Ekron in the north. The land of the 5 leaders of the Philistines is part of the land. They rule over the people of Gaza, Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gath and Ekron). And you have not taken the land of the Avvite people. 4There is also the land of the Canaanite people (which starts in the towns of Teman and Meara that belongs to the people of the town of Sidon. This is the land up to the city of Aphek. The land of the Amorites begins there). 5There is also the land of the people of the town of Gebal and the parts east of Mount Lebanon, from the town of Baal-Gad, south of Mount Hermon up to the town of Lebo-Hamath. 6The Sidon people are living in Mount Lebanon up to the town of Misrephoth-Majim. I will chase them all away and give their land to the Israelites. 7Now you must divide the land among the Israelites. You must do what I have told you. You must start and divide the land so that each of the 9 tribes and the half tribe of Manasseh gets its own land.’
The land east of the Jordan River
8The tribes of Reuben and Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh got their land east of the Jordan River. They got it when Moses, the servant of the Lord, gave it to them. 9Their land begins at the town of Aroer in the middle of the Arnon Valley, and the flatlands from the town of Medeba to the town of Dibon, 10all the towns of King Sihon of the Amorites, up to the border of the land of the Ammonites. Sihon was king in Heshbon.
11The tribes east of the Jordan River also got all the land of Gilead and the land of the people of Geshur and Maakah, Mount Hermon and the whole land of Bashan to the town of Salekah. 12This was the whole land of King Og of Bashan. He was king of the towns of Ashtaroth and Edrei. Og was one of the last of the Rephaite people and Moses had defeated King Sihon and King Og and their people and he had chased them out of their land. 13But the Israelites did not defeat the people of Geshur and Maakah and they did not chase them away. Those people still live there with the Israelites.
Why the Levi tribe did not get land
14Moses did not give land to the Levi tribe. The Lord told Moses that the Levi tribe must get the altar offerings of the Lord, the God of Israel.
The land of the Reuben tribe
15Moses gave the Reuben tribe their own land. 16This was the land from the town of Aroer next to the Arnon Valley and from the town in the valley, all the highveld around the town of Medebah, 17the town of Heshbon and all the nearby towns on the highveld. The towns were Dibon, Bamoth-Baal, Beth-Baal-Meon, 18Jahaz, Kedemoth, Mephaath, 19Kiriathaim, Sibmah, Zereth-Shahar on the hill in the valley, 20Beth-Peor, the sides of Mount Pisgah and the town of Beth-Jeshimoth.
21These were all the towns on the highveld, the land of King Sihon of the Amorites. Sihon was the king in the town of Heshbon. Moses defeated Sihon and the leaders of the Midianite people. Their leaders were Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur and Reba. They were officials of King Sihon in his land. 22The Israelites also killed Balaam, the son of Beor. He was a fortune-teller. 23The land of the Reuben tribe was next to the Jordan River. It was the land, the cities and the nearby towns, of the families in the Reuben tribe.
The land of the Gad tribe
24Moses gave land to the families in the Gad tribe. 25Their land was the town of Jazer, and half of the land of the Ammonites, up to the town of Aroer near the town of Rabbah. 26Their land was also from the town of Heshbon in the south to the towns of Ramath-Mizpah and Betonim in the north, and also the towns of Mahanaim and Debir. 27In the Jordan Valley they got the towns of Beth-Haram, Beth-Nimrah, Sukkoth and Zaphon. This was part of the land of King Sihon of Heshbon. It was east of the Jordan River up to Lake Kinnereth. 28This was the land, the cities and the nearby towns, of the families in the Gad tribe.
The land of the half tribe of Manasseh
29Moses gave land east of the Jordan River to the half tribe of Manasseh. 30Their land was from the town of Mahanaim, all the land of Bashan where King Og had ruled, and the 60 villages. 31They also got half of Gilead and the towns of Ashtaroth and Edrei where Og was king. They gave these villages to half of the descendants of Makir, son of Manasseh.
32This was the land that Moses gave to the tribes east of the Jordan River. Moses did this when he was in the flatlands of Moab, near the city of Jericho. 33But Moses did not give any land to the Levi tribe. They got the Lord, Himself, as He had promised.
