What is the first adjective that comes to mind when we think about God?

I think it would be fair to say that for many people in the post-modern world it would be a word like greatness, power, magnificence, might, majesty or splendour, but for many others, perhaps for those for whom “seeing is believing” and who question His existence, there may be a blank or a question mark. For the believer, however, there is no doubt, God is Almighty and there is no one that is His equal.

From the creation of the world God is understood to be the Supreme Being; the One with whom there is no comparison because He alone is omnipotent, all-knowing, ever-present, and therefore incomparable! So, when we read in Genesis that God appeared to ninety-nine-year-old Abram and announced Himself as God Almighty, we understand that it must have been an overwhelming experience for him. Yet Abram lived to tell the tale! We stand amazed that Almighty God would choose to speak to an ordinary man and participate in his life in a great and miraculous way. Yet God had a reason for visiting Abram because He had a purpose for his life, one of stupendous proportions.

God planned to make Abram into a great nation and to bless all people on earth through him, because it was through the Jewish people that God revealed Himself to the other peoples of the earth in the form of Jesus Christ. Where do you fit in? God’s visit to Abram transformed his life and he went down in history as the friend of God. What an amazing thought: the friend of Almighty God! Are you His friend?

Today God visits us through His Son. It is through Jesus Christ alone that our lives can be transformed and that we can come to know Him.

What does this tell us about God?
