KwabaseKolose 4:5-6ZUL59NOVula kumfundi weBhayibheli

Be wise in the way you act towards outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. 6Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone. Colossians 4:5-6, NIV

The difference between “time” (ESV) and “opportunity” (NIV) in this verse is primarily due to how the original Greek word is translated and interpreted in context. The Greek word used here is “καιρός” (kairos), which can indeed mean “time” but also carries the connotation of a specific “opportune time” or a “season of opportunity.”

The NIV translators opted to use “opportunity” to emphasise the idea of seizing moments or chances to engage with outsiders in a wise and impactful way, highlighting the urgency and intentionality with which believers should approach their interactions with non-believers. On the other hand, the ESV’s use of “time” reflects a broader view of stewarding one’s time and making wise choices in general, not limited to specific moments of opportunity with outsiders.

Both translations convey the essence of the verse – encouraging believers to live wisely, to engage thoughtfully with others, and to maximise every chance to advance God’s kingdom through their actions and words.

Paul’s instruction to “walk in wisdom” implies intentional living – a conscious effort to make wise choices in our interactions and decisions. Crucially, this wisdom extends beyond our personal lives; it also encompasses our relationships with those outside the faith. Each moment presents an opportunity to glorify God, to share his love, and to impact the lives of others. It challenges us to prioritize eternal values over fleeting pleasures and to invest in activities that align with God’s kingdom purposes.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for the gift of time and for the opportunities it brings to glorify you. Guide our interactions with others, that we may reflect your love and truth in all that we do. May our lives be a testimony to your grace and may we steward our time faithfully, in Jesus’ name, Amen
