Stewardship in my life – to buy, or to give away? - 14 November 2023

We are born without bringing anything with us into this world. And one day, at the end of this journey on earth, we will leave without taking anything with us to our next destination. It stands to reason that everything we possess in this life is only temporary. The King James Version translates today’s verse as “a time to get, and a time to lose”.
This brings us to some of life’s more important questions. What are we searching for? What do we wish to gain in life? When will we have enough? And how can I be a good steward of the things God entrusts in my care, during my journey of life?
We spend a lot of time searching for stuff – possessions. There are some things that we need to sustain our lives. We need food, shelter, energy and transport. Some things are absolute necessities, others are nice to have. Some things make our lives easier, more comfortable and more enjoyable. However, there is a danger in searching for things. Malcolm Forbes coined the phrase, “he who dies with the most toys, wins …”. We are warned in the Bible, mostly in Proverbs, about the danger that greed can bring.
We need to develop a healthy approach to the things we are searching for in life. What do I really need to live an abundant life, honouring God? What is the best product, at the best price, that will serve my purpose? Can I buy it with cash? Why do I really need it?
We also need to learn to let go of stuff. We cannot take anything tangible when God comes to take us home. There is such a sense of relief when we get rid of our excess baggage in life. It brings such a sense of freedom when I learn to let go. What do I possess that I don’t use or need anymore? What can I give away to bless someone else? It may be time to take a hard look around your house, and your life. What is not fit for purpose anymore? What is cluttering around me, ensnaring me and stealing my freedom? It may be time to give it up!
We will agree that it is better to give than to receive (Acts 20:35). How can you bless someone else from your abundance today?
Prayer: Lord, thank you for your provision in my life. You know what I need even before I ask. Please give me the wisdom to search for the right things in my life, at the right time. Thank you for blessing me with what I need to live and to be grateful for. Protect me from the snares of greed. Help me to let go of the things I don’t need. Make me a channel of your blessings to others. Amen
