It is actually quite scary when you read Matthew 12:33-37. In this passage, we read about how the things you say reflect what is going on in your heart. In addition, verse 36 states that each of us will have to answer to God for everything we have said, especially the things that are not right.
Look, heaven and being with God one day sounds absolutely wonderful. However, the idea of having to explain to God why I gossiped about others is not so great. On the contrary, the idea of it makes me downright anxious. That is why this passage really makes me think.
If you knew you were going to have to account for every conversation one day, how would you approach it? If you know nothing you say is “off the record”?
The truth is, I don’t want to be a tree that bears bad fruit. I want to be a tree that bears good fruit – the kind of fruit that people pick by hand. And when people taste that delicious fruit, they need to know where it comes from.
It’s a tall order – to be a good tree that constantly bears good fruit. I do believe God will not ask this of us if he does not believe we can manage it. And I believe, if we strive for it, one day, when we are with God, we will reap the benefits.
Prayer: Father, help me to think before I speak and act. I want to be like a tree that bears good fruit. Help me to do good and say nice things. Amen
