With God, you can face a troop

When I read these verses, I picture a stout-hearted three-year-old boy holding his father or brother’s hand, ready to sort out a few bullies. Needless to say, it is not the boy who will win the fight, but the presence of his dad or older brother that gives him the courage to try such a stunt.
When sinful people make life difficult for the believer, it hurts and angers, but when fellow believers, family or friends engage in this kind of behaviour, it cuts much deeper. However, don’t despair, you are in good company! Paul’s co-worker, Demas, deserted him and the church in Corinth questioned his integrity. David had to flee from his son Absalom; when he sinned and became sick, his own familiar friend in whom he trusted, lifted up his heel against him (Psalm 41:9). Jesus was despised by his own people and his disciples denied that they were his followers, by abandoning him in his hour of need.
What do we do if these kind of things come our way? Firstly, remember: You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world (1 John 4:4). Yes, God is with us always – we are his temple in whom he lives and amongst whom he dwells. He is our God and Father, and we are his people and children (2 Corinthians 6:16-18). For this very reason, we can and must handle these things in the way Jesus would. Differently said, we must have the mind of Christ.
Secondly, you have to realise that he is on your side. You are never alone, whatever the circumstances might be. Like that little boy, you can trustfully put your hand in his hand – with him at your side, you form a united front against any storming troop!
