10Elokuphetha ndithi njengokuba nimanywe neNkosi nje, yomelelani nincedwa ngamandla ayo. 11Nxibani sonke isikrweqe eninokusifumana kuThixo, ukuze nibe nako ukumelana nabo bonke ubuqhokolo bukaSathana. 12Kuba kweli dabi lethu asilwi nabantu, kodwa silwa nemimoya ekhohlakeleyo esesibhakabhakeni, izilawuli, nabasemagunyeni, kunye nemimoya engcolileyo yeli phakade lobumnyama.

It’s impossible to escape the symbols of earthly power that exist all around us.

Flags and vehicle cavalcades announce the presence of high-ranking officials. Uniforms and insignia worn by police and military officers denote authority and a chain of command.

And power symbols are not limited to governments. Perhaps your boss has the corner office or the prime parking spot. We even talk about power dressing and power walking.

Yet these are merely outward symbols. They do not ultimately define the character, strength, or virtue of the individuals who use them.

Paul, in his letter to the Ephesians, instructs believers to “be strong in the Lord.” Do not worry about acquiring symbols of worldly power. Instead, seek after the inner strength and characteristics that display God’s power in you.

Only God’s power can defend us against the spiritual forces of evil seeking to separate us from the Lord.

Paul goes on to tell us exactly what it looks like to be strong in the Lord and his mighty power.

If we seek truth and righteousness (Ephesians 6:14), leave footprints of peace (v15), take up the shield of faith (v16), the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit (v17), we will begin to see what it means to live in God’s resurrection power.

We don’t know what today will bring. But whatever comes, we can have strength in the Word of God.

Prayer: Lord, make our faith strong and fill us with humble confidence to live by your power. For Jesus’ sake, Amen
