The people who lived in Jerusalem
(Also in 1 Chronicles 9:3-13)
1The leaders of the people lived in Jerusalem and one out of every 10 of the other people also had to live in the Holy City. They drew_lots to see who had to live in Jerusalem and the other people could live in other towns. 2There were some people who said they would go and live in Jerusalem and the other people thanked and praised them. 3Here are the names of the leaders of the province of Judah who lived in Jerusalem. In the other towns of Judah everyone lived in their own town, the Israelites, the priests, the Levites, the temple-servants and the descendants of Solomon's servants. 4Some people of the tribes of Judah and Benjamin also lived in Jerusalem.
From the Judah tribe there was Athaiah, son of Uzziah, son of Zechariah, son of Amariah, son of Shephatiah, son of Mahalalel. They were the descendants of Perez. 5From the descendants of Shelah was Maaseiah, son of Baruch, son of Kol-Hozeh, son of Hazaiah, son of Adaiah, son of Joiarib, son of Zechariah, a descendant of Shelah. 6There were 468 men from the descendants of Perez who lived in Jerusalem. They were people who had their own land.
7From the Benjamin tribe was the family of Sallu, son of Meshullam, son of Joed, son of Pedaiah, son of Kolaiah, son of Maaseiah, son of Ithiel, son of Jeshaiah. 8Sallu's brothers were Gabbai and Sallai. There were 928 men from the Benjamin tribe. 9Their leader was Joel, son of Zikri, and Judah, son of Hassenuah, was the 2nd ruler over the city.
The priests and Levites who lived in Jerusalem
(Also in 1 Chronicles 11:10-34)
10The priests were: Jedaiah, son of Joiarib, Jakin, 11Seraiah, son of Hilkiah, son of Meshullam, son of Zadok, son of Meraioth, son of Ahitub. Ahitub was the high-priest at the temple of the Lord. 12There were 822 priests who worked at the temple. There were also Adaiah, son of Jeroham, son of Pelaliah, son of Amzi, son of Zechariah, son of Pashhur, son of Malkijah 13and the other priests with him. There were 242 leaders of families. There were also Amashsai, son of Azarel, son of Ahzai, son of Meshillemoth, son of Immer 14and the other priests with him. There were 128 in all and they were important men. Their leader was Zabdiel, son of Haggedolim.
15From the Levites there were Shemaiah, son of Hasshub, son of Azrikam, son of Hashabiah, son of Bunni, 16and Shabbethai and Jozabad, leaders of the Levites who worked outside the temple, 17and Mattaniah, the leader of the choir who praised the Lord and thanked Him. Mattaniah was the son of Mika, son of Zabdi, son of Asaph. There were also Bakbukiah, the 2nd brother of Mattaniah, and Abda, son of Shammua, son of Galal, son of Jeduthun. 18There were 284 Levites in the Holy City.
19The guards were Akkub, Talmon and the other Levites who were gatekeepers. There were 172 in all. 20The other Israelites, the priests and Levites were in the towns of Judah. Everyone had his own land. 21The temple-servants lived on the Ophel. Their leaders were Ziha and Gishpa.
22The leader of the Levites in Jerusalem was Uzzi, son of Bani, son of Hashabiah, son of Mattaniah, son of Mika. He was a descendant of Asaph. Asaph's descendants had to sing and the priests had to work at the temple. 23The king of Persia decided that they must sing every day. 24Pethahiah was the king of Persia's advisor for the people of Israel. Pethahiah was the son of Meshezabel, a descendant of Zerah, son of Judah.
The homes outside Jerusalem
25Some of the people of Judah lived near their farms in the town of Kiriath-Arba and its villages, and in Dibon, in Jekabzeel and its villages, 26in Jeshua, Moladah, Beth-Pelet, 27in Hazar-Shual, Beersheba, 28in Ziklag, Mekonah, 29in Rimmon, Zorah, Jarmuth, 30Zanoah, Adullam and its villages, Lachish and Azekah, all of them with their villages. They lived from Beersheba to the Hinnom Valley.
31The people of the Benjamin tribe lived in the towns of Geba, Mikmash, Aija, Bethel and in their villages, 32in Anathoth, Nob, Ananiah, 33Hazor, Ramah and Gittaim, 34in Hadid, Zeboim and Neballat, 35in Lod and Ono, and in Artisan Valley. 36Some groups of the Levites from Judah went to live in the land of Benjamin.
