1My child, you must listen
to the wisdom that I teach you,
and obey the things that I tell you.
2Then you will know what
the right thing is to do
and you will not say something wrong.
3This is important because the words
of a bad woman are as sweet as honey
and her kiss is as soft as olive oil.
4But later she becomes as bitter as wormwood
and as dangerous as a sharp sword.
5If you go with her, you are going
on the path of death.
She will lead you to your grave.
6She does not want to stay
on the road of life.
She does not know where she is going.
7This is why you must listen to me.
Children, don't disobey me.
8Stay away from a bad woman like that,
and don't go near her house.
9If you go there,
you will give away your honour
and her husband will be cruel to you
and kill you while you are young.
10Strangers will get all the things
that you have worked for.
Everything that you have worked for
will go to someone else.
11And at the end of your life,
you will lie down, and cry and moan
like someone who is very sick.
12Then you will say:
‘Why didn't I want to learn?
Why didn't I realise
how important wisdom is?
13I didn't want to listen
to the people who taught me.
I didn't want to hear what they say.
14Now I am ashamed. All the people
can see how I am destroyed.’
15You must be faithful to your wife.
Don't be like someone who steals water
from another man's water-well.
Drink the streams of water
that come from your own fountain.
16Don't pour out your water in the streets.
Don't give your love to other women.
17You must give it only to your wife,
and don't give your love to strangers.
18You must be happy with your wife,
and enjoy the woman that you married
when you were young.
19She is lovely and beautiful like a deer.
You must always enjoy her breasts.
You must love her and dream about her.
20My child, don't do something foolish.
Don't love a bad woman.
Don't hug a sinful woman
who is not your wife.
21The Lord sees everything that you do
and He looks where you go.
22The sins of someone who does wrong
are like a trap that catches him.
His sins are like ropes that hold him.
23People who do wrong die
because they don't want to learn.
They don't do what they should do,
and they get lost because they stay foolish.
