1The Lord showed Isaiah what would happen to Judah and Jerusalem. Isaiah was the son of Amoz.
We must live as the Lord tells us
2In the last days
the mountain where the Lord's temple is
will be higher and greater
than the other mountains and hills.
Many people will come to this mountain.
3The people of many nations
will come and they will say:
‘Let us go to the mountain of the Lord,
to the temple of the God_of_Jacob.
He will teach us what we must do
so that we can really live.
We must go to Jerusalem,
then we will know
what the Lord wants us to do
and what He wants to tell us.’
4The Lord will judge the people
and He will cause the strong nations
to make peace with each other,
the nations who are near Jerusalem
and the nations who are far away.
Then the people will melt
their swords and spears
and they will make
sharp irons to plough
and knives to cut down trees.
The people will never again
go to war_against each other
and they will not learn how to make war.
5Come, descendants of Jacob,
let us start living like the Lord tells us.
The day_of_the_Lord will come
6Our Lord, You have turned away
from your people, the descendants of Jacob,
because we do what the Philistines do.
We listen to fortune-tellers
and we live like strangers do.
7The land_of_Judah is full
of silver and gold, and the people are rich.
There are a lot of horses in the land
and the people have many war-chariots.
8The land is full of idols
and the people bow down to idols
that they have made with their hands.
9Lord, that is why we ask You
to make these people bow down.
Humiliate them,
and do not forgive them.
10People, you must go and hide
behind rocks and in holes in the ground,
because the Lord is coming.
When He comes, you will tremble,
because He is the King.
11The proud people will never again be proud.
They will bow down before Him.
Only the Lord will be important on that day.
12Yes, the day_of_the_Lord,
who rules over all, will come.
He will be against all the proud people,
and against everyone who thinks he is important.
13The Lord will be against
all the big trees on Mount Lebanon
and in the land of Bashan,
14and also against all the
high mountains and hills,
15against every high tower
and against every strong wall,
16and against all the beautiful boats
that go to the land to Tarshish.
17The proud people will have to bow down.
The people who think they are important
will be humiliated.
Only the Lord will be important on that day.
18The idols will disappear completely.
19People will hide behind rocks
and in holes in the ground,
because the Lord will come.
He will shake the earth.
Everyone will tremble in front of Him,
because He is the King.
20On that day people
will throw away their idols.
They will give to the rats and bats
the idols of silver
and gold that they have made,
the idols in front of which they have bowed.
21They will hide in caves
in the mountains and between the rocks
because the Lord will come.
He will shake the earth.
Everyone will tremble in front of Him,
because He is the King.
22Stop trusting in the power of people.
They are worthless.
If they don't breathe, they will die.
Don't think that people can help you.
