The people who had to sing in the temple
1David and the leaders of the army decided that the men of the families of Asaph, Heman and Jeduthun had to prophesy while the priests played the lyres, harps and cymbals. Here are the names of the men who had to do this.
2From the Asaph family there were Zakkur, Joseph, Nethaniah and Asarelah. They were the sons of Asaph and Asaph was their leader. Asaph had to prophesy when the king asked him to. 3From the Jeduthun family there were the 6 sons of Jeduthun. They were Gedaliah, Zeri, Jeshaiah, Shimei, Hashabiah and Mattithiah. Their father was the leader. While they played the lyre, Jeduthun had to prophesy and thank the Lord and praise Him.
4From the Heman family were the sons of Heman. They were Bukkiah, Mattaniah, Uzziel, Shubuel, Jerimoth, Hananiah, Hanani, Eliathah, Giddalti, Romamti-Ezer, Joshbekashah, Mallothi, Hothir and Mahazioth. 5They were all the sons of Heman, the prophet of the king. God had promised Heman that He would make him an important man, so God gave him 14 sons and 3 daughters.
6Their father was their leader when they played music in the temple with cymbals, harps and lyres. They had to do this while the priests were working in the temple. Asaph, Jeduthun and Heman worked for the king. 7There were 288 people who could play music for the Lord with the other Levites who learned to sing. 8They drew_lots to see who must work in the temple and when they had to work. They did this for everyone, for the old people and for the young, for the people who knew how to sing and for the people who were learning.
9-31When they drew_lots for the Asaph family, the first name was Joseph, Gedaliah was 2nd, Zakkur was 3rd, Izri was 4th, Nethaniah was 5th, Bukkiah was 6th, Jesarelah was 7th, Jeshaiah was 8th, Mattaniah was 9th, Shimei was 10th, Azarel was 11th, Hashabiah was 12th, Shubael was 13th, Mattithiah was 14th, Jerimoth was 15th, Hananiah was 16th, Joshbekashah was 17th, Hanani was 18th, Mallothi was 19th, Eliathah was 20th, Hothir was 21st, Giddalti was 22nd, Mahazioth was 23rd and Romamti-Ezer was 24th.
There were 12 men in each group: the leader, his sons and the other Levites.
