Why are you so worried? - 22 November 2024

Please read the whole passage in Matthew 6:25-34.

We learnt yesterday that we cannot serve two masters. We cannot spend all our lives to collect wealth and think that we can give God a little part of our lives on the side. The challenge we saw yesterday is not just about dreaming to become rich, it is also applicable to our daily struggle to survive financially in troubled times. It concerns most of us directly, because so few of us are in a position where we never struggle financially. It is normal to think about the future with a little doubt when economic times are so hard, as these days.

We chose to serve Christ as Master and to put our trust in him. It remains a challenge to remember who we are and to Whom we belong when we are faced with tough times. In Matthew 6:32, Jesus repeats the promise of Matthew 6:8. Our Father in heaven knows what we need.

Peter had a beautiful testimony in 2 Peter 1:3 about God’s providence. “His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.”

Jesus promises this to us in Matthew 6:33: “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

I think every one of us has the experience that we do not have everything we want to have. We do not always receive what we pray for. The question arises today: are you really following the King with your whole heart? Are you really seeking the righteousness of God in your life, in every aspect? Are you committed to do his will at every cost, are you obediently following where he leads you? If so, the promise stands that he will provide in everything you need to live, and to realise your ministry with your gifts and calling. Jesus promised us this in John 15:7: “If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.” He did not promise wealth and material prosperity. He promised giving what we need to survive and serve.

We are challenged today to grow from worry to trust in God’s goodness and providence.

Prayer: Lord, you know me, you know my heart. You see it when I am worried about my life and my future. You know that I have a hard time trusting in you when I face the cares of this world. Help me to hold on to your promises, give me victory over all my fear. Lord, you know the challenges I face today. Let your kingdom break through and let your will be done in me today. Amen
