Twenty-two people in the Bible who had to be more patient than you: Mary & Joseph - 24 August 2023

Mary, a young woman from Nazareth, received an angelic visitation that would change the course of history. She was told that she would conceive and give birth to the Son of God. In a society where unwed pregnancy was met with scorn and shame, Mary’s patience was tested as she navigated the unknown path set before her. Yet, her response echoed her faith: “I am the Lord’s servant. May your word to me be fulfilled” (Luke 1:38).

Joseph, too, found himself grappling with a situation that required immense patience. Upon learning of Mary’s pregnancy, he faced a moral dilemma. But an angelic message reassured him of God’s sovereign plan and the role he would play in it. Joseph’s patient obedience shines through as he took Mary as his wife and cared for her and the child that wasn’t his by blood, but was divinely appointed.

As Mary and Joseph journeyed to Bethlehem, their patient trust in God was further tested. Despite the challenges of a long and arduous journey, they held onto the promise of God’s plan unfolding before them. And on that night, in a humble stable, their patient faith was rewarded as they witnessed the birth of the long-awaited Messiah.

In a world that often values quick solutions and immediate results, Mary and Joseph’s patient trust stands out as a beacon of light. Their story reminds us that God’s timing is flawless and his promises are certain.

Prayer: Gracious God, help us to trust in your plan, even when it diverges from our expectations. May our lives reflect the same patient obedience and unwavering trust that Mary and Joseph exhibited. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
