1992. Olympic Games. Barcelona. In front of 65 000 spectators, Derek Redmond prepared for the 400 m semi-final against the other athletes. He was one of the favourites to win this heat. However, 175 m before the end of the race, he pulled a hamstring. Within seconds he was on the ground in pain.
Although the medical staff ran towards him with a stretcher, Derek stood up and began to hop-hop towards the finish line, determined to finish the race.
At the same time a man ran down the stairs of the pavilion, before bursting through security with the words: “You are not going to stop me. Derek is my son and I’m going to help him.”
On the track, Jim Redmond placed his arm around his son and together they crossed the finish line with a standing ovation from the crowd.
I cry every time I watch the video. To me it symbolises God supporting us during difficult moments. In 2 Corinthians 12:9 He says: “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.” (ESV) Also in Isaiah 40:29,31 we read: “He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak … those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary; they will walk and not be faint.” (NIV)
At the end of our strength and abilities, God’s strength makes us strong and carries us. He encourages us and gives us strength to fly with eagle wings. May we experience it again this week. God bless.
Prayer: Father God, thank you very much for strengthening me when I am weak or tired. Please help me in the week ahead to keep my eyes on you. I ask this in the Name of Jesus Christ. Amen
