I like knowing where I stand with people. I also like having a good sense of what to expect – whether at work or at home. Yes, I am not someone who enjoys being caught off guard.

I am not naive. No. I understand that life is unpredictable and we cannot control everything around us. However, when I find myself in a situation where I do not really know what to do, it can turn my whole world upside down.

Have you ever been in a situation where you had to make a decision, but both options were equally challenging? No matter which path you choose, you will have to face something unpleasant or difficult? I do not enjoy feeling that way. Like anyone else, I prefer when things go smoothly and as planned. I like smooth sailing.

Ha! You’re probably laughing, because that is not how life works, right?

Uncertainty is one of life’s dark places for me, because it scares me. I am afraid when I do not know what the outcome of a decision will be. I am afraid of the unknown. I am afraid of consequences I cannot necessarily control. I am afraid of making a mistake or doing something that makes things worse, instead of better.

Psalm 23:4 is so simple and the message is so clear. God will protect us when we go through difficult times. God will not allow us to go through it alone. He is there. And the best part? He already knows what is going to happen next and he will be there for you, no matter what. Remind yourself of this when things start to feel dark.

Prayer: Lord, please hold my hand when the uncertainties of life overwhelm me. Help me to remember that you are holding my hand when I am afraid. Amen.
