Strikingly, Agur thinks realistically about his future within the Lord’s dominion – about what will essentially matter, with regard to his ability in God. Read proverbs30:5-6, “Every word of God is flawless; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him. Do not add to his words …”
He asks, as it were, for God to protect him from himself so that his own will and thoughts are not conflict with God’s.
He is not selfishly self-focused, he does not want to ‘go big’ and for a high position or name, or his own pleasure (and then get lost in it and neglect most of it or do nothing at all like many people do).
A friend who currently has a large and internationally recognised ministry once had to hear from the Lord, “Make your tent a little smaller. Do not think too big. Think smaller – towards an achievable goal that can be better managed.” By obeying it and doing it well under the Lord’s guidance and blessing, the work grew systematically and under God’s tutelage and, in effect, blessing thousands of people.
Actually, we need to think and pray about the Creator and Lord’s purpose with our lives – that’s where we will enjoy meaning, peace and joy that transcends all understanding. After all, Peter says, “Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time … because he cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:6-7)
Prayer: Lord, you know everything I think, desire and struggle with. Please help me to enjoy following you in wisdom and bear the fruit that you desire. In Jesus’ name. Amen
