The families in Jerusalem
1The names of all the Israelites are written in the name list in the book of the kings_of_Israel. The people of Judah were caught and they were taken to the land of Babylon because they were unfaithful to the Lord. 2The first people, who later came back from Babylon to live in their own land and towns again, were priests, Levites, temple-servants and other Israelites. 3Some of the people of the tribes of Judah, Benjamin, Ephraim and Manasseh went to live in Jerusalem. They were:
4Uthai, son of Ammihud, son of Omri, son of Imri, son of Bani. They were the descendants of Perez, son of Judah. 5From the people of Shiloh there was the oldest son Asaiah and his sons. 6From the sons of Zerah were Jeuel and his family. There were 690 of them. 7From the Benjamin tribe there were Sallu, son of Meshullam, son of Hodaviah, son of Hassenuah, 8Ibneiah, son of Jeroham, Elah, son of Uzzi, son of Mikri and Meshullam, son of Shephatiah, son of Reuel, son of Ibnijah, 9and other people in their family. There were 956 of them. All these men were leaders of their families.
The priests and Levites who came back to Jerusalem
10Here are the names of the priests who went to live in Jerusalem.
They were Jedaiah, Jehoiarib, Jakin, 11and Azariah, son of Hilkiah, son of Meshullam, son of Zadok, son of Meraioth, son of Ahitub, the chief_official of the temple. 12There was also Adaiah, son of Jeroham, son of Pashhur, son of Malkijah, and Maasai, son of Adiel, son of Jahzerah, son of Meshullam, son of Meshillemith, son of Immer. 13There were 1 760 priests. They were leaders of their families and important men who could do their work in the temple.
The Levites who came back
14The names of the Levites were: Shemaiah, son of Hasshub, son of Azrikam, son of Hashabiah, son of the descendants of Merari. 15There was also Bakbakkar, Heresh, Galal and Mattaniah, son of Mika, son of Zikri, son of Asaph, 16and Obadiah, son of Shemaiah, son of Galal, son of Jeduthun and Berekiah, son of Asa, son of Elkanah. Elkanah lived in the villages near the town of Netophah.
17The gatekeepers were Shallum, Akkub, Talmon, Ahiman and their families. Shallum was the leader. 18These people had been the gatekeepers of the tents of the Levites before, and they were still guards at the Kings Gate east of the temple. 19The other gatekeepers were Shallum, son of Kore, son of Ebiasaph, son of Korah and his family. The Korah family had to stand guard at the doors of the tent of the Lord. Their forefathers were guards at the gate of the camp of the Lord. 20Phinehas, son of Eleazar, had been the chief gatekeeper before. The Lord was with Phinehas. 21Zechariah, son of Meshelemiah, was the gatekeeper of the tent of the Lord.
22There were 212 gatekeepers. All of their names are written in the name lists of the towns where they lived. David and Samuel the prophet chose them to do this work. 23They and their sons were guards at the doors of the tent of the Lord and the temple. 24There were gatekeepers east, west, south and north of the temple. 25They lived with their families in their towns and when it was time for them to come and help with the work at the temple, they came to the temple and they stayed there for 7 days. 26The 4 most important gatekeepers were Levites and they worked there every day. They also had to see that everything was right in the store rooms and in the other rooms of the temple. 27They slept near the temple because they had to be on guard and they had to open the doors and unlock them every morning.
28Some of the Levites had to look after the tools that the priests used. They had to count all the tools before they took them to the priests and when they took them back. 29Some of the other Levites had to look after the other tools in the temple, and the flour, wine, olive oil, incense and spices. 30Some priests had to mix the spices. 31One of the Levites, Mattithiah, was the oldest son of Shallum from the family of Korah. He was the leader of the bakers and he had to bake the flat bread. 32Some of the other Levites were descendants of Kohath. They had to put the rows of sacrificial bread on the table every Sabbath day.
33The leaders of the Levites who had to sing at the temple lived in the rooms at the temple. They did not have other work to do because they had to be ready to sing at any time of the day or night. 34All of these people whose names are written in this list of names were leaders of their families and were descendants of Levi, and they lived in Jerusalem.
Saul's forefathers and descendants

35Jeiel was the forefather of the people of Gibeon and he lived in the town of Gibeon. The name of his wife was Maakah. 36His oldest son was Abdon and his other sons were Zur, Kish, Baal, Ner, Nadab, 37Gedor, Ahio, Zechariah and Mikloth.
38Mikloth was the father of Shimeam. They also lived near their families in Jerusalem. 39Ner was the father of Kish, Kish was the father of Saul and Saul was the father of Jonathan, Malki-Shua, Abinadab and Esh-Baal. 40The son of Jonathan was Merib-Baal and Merib-Baal was the father of Micah. 41The sons of Micah were Pithon, Melek, Tahrea and Ahaz. 42Ahaz was the father of Jadah and Jadah was the father of Alemeth, Azmaveth and Zimri. Zimri was the father of Moza. 43Moza was the father of Binea, Binea was the father of Rephaiah, Rephaiah was the father of Eleasah and Eleasah was the father of Azel. 44Azel had 6 sons. Their names were Azrikam, Bokeru, Ishmael, Sheariah, Obadiah and Hanan.
