The Reuben tribe
1Reuben was the oldest son of Israel. He had the right_of_the_firstborn_son but he lost it because he had sex with one of his father's concubines. That is why his father gave that right to the 2 sons of Joseph, Israel's son, and that is why Reuben's name was not written first in the list of names of the sons of Israel. 2Judah became the most important of his brothers and the king_of_Israel later came from the Judah tribe, but it was Joseph who got the right_of_the_firstborn_son. 3The sons of Israel's oldest son, Reuben, were Hanok, Pallu, Hezron and Karmi.
4Joel was the father of Shemaiah, Shemaiah was the father of Gog, Gog was the father of Shimei, 5Shimei was the father of Micah, Micah was the father of Reaiah, Reaiah was the father of Baal, 6and Baal was the father of Beerah. Beerah was the leader of the Reuben tribe when King Tiglath-Pileser from Assyria caught him and took him away. 7The names of the brothers of Beerah were Jeiel and Zechariah. Their families' names were written in the list of names and Jeiel was their leader.
8The names of the brothers of Beerah were Jeiel, Zechariah, and Bela, son of Azaz, the son of Shema, the son of Joel. They lived from the town of Aroer to the towns of Nebo and Baal-Meon. 9They lived to the eastern side next to the desert which is south of the Euphrates River because their sheep and goats became too many in the land of Gilead. 10In the time when Saul was king, the Reuben tribe made war_against the Hagrite people. They defeated the Hagrite people and they went to live in their homes at the eastern side of Gilead.
The Gad tribe
11The Gad tribe lived next to the Reuben tribe in the land of Bashan as far as Salekah. 12Joel was the leader and Shapham was the 2nd leader. Janai and Shaphat were the other leaders in Bashan. 13The 7 families of the Gad tribe were Michael, Meshullam, Sheba, Jorai, Jakan, Zia and Eber. 14They were the descendants of Abihail, son of Huri, son of Jaroah, son of Gilead, son of Michael, son of Jeshishai, son of Jahdo, son of Buz. 15The leader of their families was Ahi, son of Abdiel, son of Guni.
16The Gad tribe lived in the land of Gilead and in the land of Bashan and all its villages and in the fields of Sharon where the sheep had grass to eat. 17In the time when King Jotham of Judah and King Jeroboam of Israel ruled, they wrote all the names of the Gad people in a list.
18There were 44 760 men who were old enough to go to war from the Reuben tribe, the Gad tribe and the half tribe of Manasseh. Some men had shields and swords and some had bows_and_arrows. They had learned how to fight 19and they went to war_against the Hagrite people, people from Jetur, Naphish and Nodab. 20The tribes of Reuben, Gad, and east Manasseh prayed to God when they went to war and God listened to their prayers because they believed that He would help them. God helped them to defeat the Hagrite people and all the other people with them. 21These tribes took 50 000 camels from the Hagrite people, and 250 000 sheep and goats and 2 000 donkeys. They also caught 100 000 people and took them away. 22Many of the Hagrite people died because it was God who made war_against them. Then the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and east Manasseh went to live in the land that they had taken and they stayed there until the king of Babylon caught them and took them away.
The half tribe of Manasseh east of the Jordan River
23There were many people in the half tribe of Manasseh. They lived in the land of Bashan from the towns of Baal-Hermon and Senir to Mount Hermon. There were a lot of people. 24The leaders of their families were Epher, Ishi, Eliel, Azriel, Jeremiah, Hodaviah and Jahdiel. All of them were important soldiers. Other people respected them because they were the leaders of their families.
25But the people of these tribes were unfaithful to the God of their fathers and they worshipped other gods, the gods of the people who had been in the land before them. God had chased away those people so that the tribes_of_Israel could live there. 26Then the God of Israel made King Pul of Assyria decide to catch these tribes and to take them away. King Pul's other name was Tiglath-Pileser. King Pul caught the people of Reuben, Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh and he took them away to the towns of Halah, Habor, Hara and the Gozan River and they are still there.
