Lord, will You do what You have promised us?
This is a song of Ethan, a descendant of Ezrah.
1Lord, I will always sing
about your love that never changes,
and I will tell about You who are faithful
from one generation to the next one.
2I will say: ‘Your love never ends.
It continues forever.
You are faithful and You never change,
like the heaven above.’
3You said: ‘I made a covenant
with the man that I chose,
and I promised to be with my servant David.
4I told him: “I will bless your family,
and one of your descendants will always be king.” ’ Selah
5Lord, everyone in heaven
must praise You and talk about
the miracles that You do.
The angels who come together
must talk about You who are faithful.
6There is no one in heaven like the Lord.
Not one of the angels can do what He does.
7O God, every one of all the angels
who come together fears You.
Every one around You
respects You and serves You.
8Lord, God Almighty,
no one is as strong and powerful as You are,
and no one is as loving and faithful as You.
9You rule over the wild sea
when the waves become big and high,
and You make them quiet and still.
10You defeated Rahab, the sea monster.
You defeated your enemies and
chased them away with your power.
11Heaven and earth belong to You.
Everything in the world belongs to You
because You have made them all.
12You have decided
where north and south must be.
Mount Tabor and Mount Hermon
rejoice because they know You.
13You are very strong.
You have a lot of power,
and You can do what You want to do.
14You are the King who does
what is right and fair for everyone.
Your love never ends
and You are always faithful.
15Lord, people who know
how to rejoice and praise You
are very happy people.
Those who live with You are happy.
16They rejoice all day
because they know You,
and they tell everyone that
You are fair and righteous.
17They are strong because You are
their King and You are with them.
We are strong because You love us.
18The Lord, the holy God of Israel,
has given us a king who must protect us.
19Lord, long ago You appeared
in a vision to the people
who believed in You and You said:
‘I have decided to help a brave man.
I have chosen one of your people
and I have made him important.
20I have called my servant David
and have anointed him
with my holy olive oil.
21I will protect him and make him strong.
22His enemies will not be able to defeat him,
and no cruel people will defeat him.
23I will kill the people
who are against him,
and I will defeat the people who hate him.
24I will be with him,
my love for him will never change,
and he will win and be strong
because he belongs to Me.
25I will make him rule over lands
as far as the sea and the Euphrates River.
26He will say to me:
“You are my Father, my God,
my Rock and my Saviour.”
27I will make him as important
as my firstborn son.
He will be the greatest and
most important king on earth.
28My love for him will never change.
I will always do what I have promised him
and I will never break my covenant with him.
29He will always have
a descendant who will rule,
as long as the sun is in the sky.
30If his descendants forget my laws
and don't do what I tell them,
31if they break my rules and
disobey my commandments,
32then I will punish them because
of their sins and make them suffer.
33But I will not stop loving them
and I will always be faithful to them
and do what I have promised.
34My covenant will
always stay important to Me,
and I will not change the things that I have said.
35I have made a promise, I, the holy God,
and I will not lie to David.
36His family and descendants
will go on forever,
and one of his descendants will rule
for as long as the sun is in the sky.
37This is sure,
as sure as the moon is in the sky
as a witness of what God does.’ Selah
38But, Lord, You are angry
with your anointed servant.
You have pushed him away and You left him.
39You broke the covenant
that You had made with your servant.
You made his crown fall
on the ground and it has become dirty.
40You have broken down all the walls
around his city and You have let enemies
destroy all the strong cities.
41Everyone who walks past
can take anything he wants.
The people from the other lands
laugh and mock the king.
42You have made his enemies defeat him,
and all of them rejoice because they have won.
43You have made
the king's sword weak and useless,
so he could not stand and win the war.
44You took away his crown and You
threw his throne on the ground.
45You made him an old man very quickly.
You made him lose everything
and You made him ashamed. Selah
46Lord, for how long
will You hide from us? Always?
How long will You stay angry
and be like a burning fire?
47Please remember how short my life is.
You have made people
so they can die easily.
48There is no man who can
keep on living and never die.
No person can escape the grave. Selah
49Lord, where is the love
that You have always shown us?
Why didn't You stay faithful and
do what You had promised David?
50Lord, please remember the bad things
that people said to me, your servant.
Don't forget how I have suffered
because the nations have mocked me.
51Lord, those people who mock me
are your enemies,
and they laugh at everything I do,
I, your anointed servant.
52Praise the Lord forever.
Amen and amen.
