Hezekiah’s Tunnel

2 Kings 20:20 and 2 Chronicles 32:30 both mention the tunnel that King Hezekiah made to lead water to the city. This was probably prompted by the fact that King Sennacherib of Assyria was threatening to lay siege to Jerusalem.

Has the Tunnel Been Found?

A 582 yard (about 532 m) tunnel has been found that could date from around the time of King Hezekiah. The tunnel partly makes use of Warren’s Shaft.

The tunnel was dug from two sides by two teams of labourers. An inscription in Hebrew is found on the wall of the tunnel where the two teams met, commemorating the completion of the tunnel.

It is possible that this tunnel was Hezekiah’s Tunnel, but that cannot be definitively proven. Hezekiah’s name is not mentioned in the inscription.
