Dining Table

In Old Testament times, ordinary people did not tend to use a table. They normally sat on a straw mat or an animal skin on the floor. People sat or reclined around it.
Wealthier people often did have a table, for example the Canaanite ruler Adonibezek in Judges 1:7.

Reclining at the Table

In the time of the New Testament, people did eat at long tables of about a foot (about 0,3 m) high. People would lie down on their left side around the table. They would lean on their left elbow and eat with their right hand. They would bend their legs back, which is how it was possible for the woman in Luke 7:38 to wash Jesus’ feet with her tears while he was eating.
