Cooking Pot

Cooking pots were used to boil water or cook food. They were deep pots made of earthenware or metal, such as bronze or copper.
The cooking pot could be hung above the fire by a rope, or be placed on stones positioned around the fire. The cooking pot could also be placed at the round opening of a bread oven.

Shape of the Cooking Pot

In the Bronze Age (up to 1200 BC) a cooking pot was usually large in size, with a large opening. Cooking pots from this time usually did not have handles.
When the Philistines settled in the coastal area of the Mediterranean Sea, they brought a type of cooking pot with them. This was a taller type, with a narrower opening and handles. A rope could be pulled through the handles to hang the pot above the fire.
Between 1000 and 600 BC these two kinds of cooking pots developed into a new type. Typically, this was round in shape with a wide opening, like the Bronze Age type, but with handles.
