Banner

A banner or standard was a flag or a metal board on a long pole. A banner was carried by the army and served to identify a group of soldiers.

In battle, the banner was a gathering point for soldiers and after a battle it could be placed as a sign of victory.

The banner is also used in Isaiah 11:10-12 as a metaphor for the reuniting of the people of Israel and Judah after the exile:

“The LORD will raise a signal flag to show the nations that he is gathering together again the scattered people of Israel and Judah and bringing them back from the four corners of the earth.” (Isaiah 11:12)
