Dowry

When a woman was given in marriage, the (family of the) husband had to pay a dowry or a bridal price.

Dowry as Compensation

The dowry was intended as compensation for the young woman’s parents. After all, they were losing the labour of their daughter. The dowry could be paid in money or gifts. But it could also consist of a quid pro quo or an exchange of women. Thus David was able to marry Michal, Saul’s daughter, in exchange for a hundred Philistine foreskins (1 Samuel 18:24-26). The level of the dowry was determined in the course of negotiations between the families of the future husband and wife.
The woman was given money or goods by her family, as we read in Judges 1:11-15. What she received from her family remained her property, even after any future divorce.
