Anointing Oil

Anointing oil consisted of a mixture of oil and fragrances. Mixing anointing oil was a job for a professional: a member of the guild of perfumers.

Liturgical Anointing Oil

The composition of anointing oil used for religious purposes is precisely prescribed. The ointment must not be used for other, earthly purposes. According to Exodus 30:23-24, holy anointing oil consists of:

  • one gallon (4 ℓ) of olive oil;
  • 12 pounds (6 kg) of liquid myrrh;
  • 6 pounds (3 kg) of sweet-smelling cinnamon;
  • 6 pounds (3 kg) of sweet-smelling cane;
  • 12 pounds (6 kg) of cassia.
