Set Prayers

From the time of the New Testament we know a number of Jewish set prayers. They differ in wording and length:

  • the Shema (the creed from Deuteronomy 6:4, which starts with “Israel, remember this!”);
  • the Amidah, said three times a day.

The Lord’s Prayer

The Lord’s Prayer (Matthew 6:9-13; Luke 11:1-4) has its roots in the Jewish tradition and was given an important place in the liturgy of the early Church.
