Eschatology: Jewish Roots
The eschatology of the New Testament fits well with the end-time expectations in first-century Judaism.
Jewish Eschatology
Jewish end-time expectation had various forms. Important aspects are:
- a revolution, led by God, which would lead to the Jews gaining dominion over Israel, or even the whole world, from Jerusalem;
- a new king (messiah
) who brings about the revolution in God’s name; - a cosmic intervention by God, in which God will judge everyone, and which culminates in a completely renewed world;
- the coming of a divine envoy from heaven who brings about a renewed world.
