Eschatology: Jewish Roots

The eschatology of the New Testament fits well with the end-time expectations in first-century Judaism.

Jewish Eschatology

Jewish end-time expectation had various forms. Important aspects are:

  • a revolution, led by God, which would lead to the Jews gaining dominion over Israel, or even the whole world, from Jerusalem;
  • a new king (messiah) who brings about the revolution in God’s name;
  • a cosmic intervention by God, in which God will judge everyone, and which culminates in a completely renewed world;
  • the coming of a divine envoy from heaven who brings about a renewed world.

Christian Content

The most important difference between Jewish and Christian end-time expectations is, of course, the role of Jesus. The first followers of Jesus were Jews. They probably saw in him the expected messiah, and they thought that with him the end times had begun. They then anticipated that Jesus would play a part in the definitive judgement. This idea is a further development of Jewish end-time expectations.
